What I Wore Sunday: Palm Sunday

Palm Sunday today!  This Lent really seemed to fly by this year, or at least, that is how it seemed to me.  Perhaps Holy Week will move at a crawl?  We've had some challenges this past week, as my husband was sick in bed with the flu from Monday afternoon on, so it felt like he was out of town all week.  He started tamiflu on Thursday afternoon and said yesterday that he was starting to feel human again.  That said, he still isn't able to be up for more than a couple of hours at a time, so we thought it prudent to stay in town for church this morning and go to the parish nearby instead.

It being Palm Sunday (and one of two liturgical "green" days during the year) I wore an eshakti knit dress.  It is a little more saucy 60s than I thought it would be, and I probably should have sized down--I've lost a little weight, and the knit and cut of this dress is very forgiving--but it is very comfortable and nursing friendly.  Yoga pants in a dress, so to speak.  Just the thing for an achy-body day.  I think a belt would help, as would rolling the sleeves up to elbow length.  I customized the sleeve length, and probably should have gone for elbow length since my arms are so short.  It will do for Pentecost and Palm Sunday, though.

Russians use pussy willows on Palm Sunday because palms don't grow in Russia, but since this is America, and things tend to hybridize over time, we get pussy willows with a palm tied together.

Piglet is in the red sticharion.  I think the candle was a leetle bit too heavy for him as he was struggling to hold it upright.  The church also had a Russian deacon in from somewhere and he was marvelous--that true Russian basso profundo liturgical sound.

Reading the Gospel in English (after the deacon read it in Slavonic).  We are so appreciative that Father has tried to make non-Russian speakers feel welcome in a fairly ethnic parish.

A blessed Holy Week to us all!
I'm probably not going to be blogging this week, although I do have a bang-up Odds and Ends list coming up for Bright Week.
Forgive me, a sinner.
See you on the other side.

  5. I feel very enlightened after reading your post. I've been to some Byzantine rite services, but this looks very intriguing and so full of wonderful and meaningful tradition! Thanks for sharing.
