Talking Tuesday: "This marriage is ours."

For today, a reflection on a decade of marriage, which I thought appropriate and spot-on.

Taken at the July wedding of some church friends.

"Over this past decade, there have been a good many things we used to have in common that we no longer do. Life changed us. We got bored with some things. We discovered new things. We discovered that stuff we thought we had in common really wasn’t. One by one, our preconceptions of what married life is supposed to be have come to light. Many have been set aside. But we still belong, and this marriage is ours."

  1. As DH and I near our ninth wedding anniversary this October (we married about seven months after we met, so the number of years we've been together is, for all intents, the same as the number we've been married), I can relate to many of these sentiments so well, but feel that my take on the decade (or near decade) would be somewhat more positive. Things change indeed, but so often for the better, and I've never, for a moment, felt bored with my partner. Quite the opposite actually, he helps keep life so tremendously exciting and rewarding each and every day. I can't wait to hit the ten year mark and beyond!

    1. We were neighbors with the Damicks during seminary, so I think I can say that I don't think Fr. Andrew means that he became bored with Nicole, or vice versa. I think he means that the sorts of hobbies and interests that they each had when they met evolved and changed over time--they became bored with some of the activities they used to share, or lost interest in some of the hobbies they both participated in. At least, that is my read on it. :)
